Icelandic Eiderdown Duvets

If you would like to spoil yourself with something extraordinary, an eiderdown duvet makes an excellent choice. The eider duck only makes its home within the polar circle and has adapted to the harsh environmental conditions which prevail there. The female lines her nest with the finest, softest down, plucked from her breast. When the nest has been abandoned, the local people collect the down by hand with the utmost care and attention.
Eider ducks live in the most inhospitable of all terrains. Blown from all sides by bitterly cold polar gales, the naked chicks have to survive. In spite of this, there is no other baby bird which is raised in such uniquely cozy and warm surroundings. They snuggle down in the nests, lined with breast down from the mother duck.
This breast down is fully intertwined so that it cannot be blown away by the wind; it also weighs next to nothing and the feathers are infinitely fine. The miniscule fibres wrap the cold air up then warm it, thereby creating a totally unique sleeping climate.
Anyone who has ever held eiderdown in the palm of their hand will remember the astonishing, secretive aura and the wonderful softness against the skin.
The harvest is very small and fluctuates depending upon the conditions while the eider ducks are brooding. The down is harvested by hand, on principle, only when the young have flown and the nests are no longer needed.
The down is very gently intertwined and can therefore be enclosed in the finest of silks. Our duvet covers are made using Shantug silk. With its characteristic knobbly texture, it is wonderfully light and soft to the touch.
